Is this music really free?
Yes. It costs nothing, needs no account and has no subscription. Every track is licensed under CC BY 4.0, which lets anyone use it for any purpose, as long as they credit it.
Can I use it in monetized YouTube videos?
Yes. CC BY 4.0 allows commercial use, so the music itself doesn't stop you earning from a video. Your channel still has to follow YouTube's own monetization policies, which cover far more than music.
Can I use it on TikTok, Instagram and other social media?
Yes. Purrple Cat Self Releases can be used on every social media platform, including YouTube (videos, Shorts and livestreams), TikTok, Instagram and Reels, Facebook, X, Twitch, Snapchat, as long as you credit them.
Can I upload the music, or a remix or cover of it, to Spotify or other streaming services?
Please don't. Purrple Cat's one rule is that the music isn't released on streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music or Deezer, through DistroKid, TuneCore or any other distributor, whether as-is, sped up, slowed, in a compilation, or as a remix, a track that samples it, or a cover. Many distributors register releases in Content ID, so those releases are what cause false claims on other creators' videos. Posting your own video with the music on YouTube, TikTok or any social platform is fine.
Do I have to give credit?
Yes, that is the one condition. Name Purrple Cat, say the license is CC BY 4.0 and link to it. Every row in the catalog has a copy button with the exact line. More in how to credit CC BY music.
Will I get a Content ID claim?
Not from Purrple Cat. Self Releases are not registered in YouTube Content ID, and never will be, so Purrple Cat won't claim your video. Once in a while a third party falsely claims a track. If that happens, dispute it in YouTube Studio, quote the CC BY 4.0 license and point to your credit. False claims are dealt with promptly once they're reported.
Is it really “no copyright”?
No, and that is good news. The music is copyrighted by Purrple Cat and licensed to you. The license is what gives you written permission. See no copyright vs royalty-free.
Can I edit, loop or cut the tracks?
Yes. You can trim, loop, slow down, remix or layer them. If you changed a track, say so in the credit, for example “edited”. Just don't release a remix on streaming services.
Is every Purrple Cat song CC BY?
No. This site lists only Purrple Cat Self Releases, which are CC BY 4.0. Some Purrple Cat songs came out through record labels on different terms, so use the tracks listed here or check each release's own license.
Can the license be taken back later?
Creative Commons licenses can't be revoked for people already using the work under them. If you follow the terms, your use stays licensed. If you break them, CC BY 4.0 lets your rights come back automatically when you fix it within 30 days of finding out. Details are in the legal code, section 6.
